Burning with hurt, he catches sight of gold hidden in the Rhine.
When he learns that the gold can confer limitless power, the severity of his anguish enables him to accept the necessary sacrifice: the renunciation of love. He creates the ring, then loses it to Wotan, the morally and financially bankrupt chief of the gods. Hurt becomes rage, and the prattling little person of the opening scene changes into a figure of sardonic eloquence, cursing anyone who touches the trinket:.

When he first appears, he is likable, almost roly-poly. There is rough warmth in his voice as he waxes enthusiastic about each Rhinemaiden. O Schmerz!
Eric Owens dominates the Met’s “Rheingold.”
When I first heard Owens, he seemed more basslike than baritonal, but he has developed a cutting, at times electrifying, upper register. He interacts alertly with the orchestra, listening as instrumentalists do. Too often, Alberich is more growled than sung. He turns into a stock villain.
thevikingworld / Wagner's Ring
Wagner had a much more complicated personality in mind—an ambiguous figure who does evil and to whom evil is done. And when he curses the ring he communicates not only rage but also wisdom: the lust for power is already rampant among the gods, and the curse seems like the inevitable consequence. It ends on a cliffhanger — Alberich who's had the gold stolen from him by the gods vowing revenge, Loge Wotan's side-kick unsure whether to follow the gods home or sit back and watch them self-destruct, and the all-powerful Ring in the hands of an angry giant who's just killed his brother.
That is not a good place to leave a drama. But the seed of my conversion has been sown by two moments of perfectly wonderful operatic drama.

The first was when Erda goddess of the earth appeared in the organ loft above the bust of Henry Wood to warn Wotan of the Ring's curse, accompanied by a return of the primordial music of the prelude; and the second was the final denouement, when Donner god of thunder whips out a thunderbolt, parts the clouds, and fashions a rainbow into a bridge to take the family safely home. In fact, Donner did his job so well that as I cycled home across Hyde Park, the heavens opened, and I got soaked as the night gave way to a thunderstorm.
